Matt Matzen conceptualized neon reel entertainment and worked at every level to nurture its development over the past seven years. Originally, this Rochester, MN native began pursuing his dream by developing basic editing techniques with footage he gathered from parties and everyday events. By 2011, Matzen has produced short films, music videos, a series and special effects reels under the neon reel brand.

Born in Rochester, MN on July 24th 1984, this film fanatic analyzes film in his spare time and observes the work of directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Kevin Smith, John Hughes, Steven Spielberg, George Romero, Oliver Stone, JJ Abrams.

He finds tremendous support from his wife Sara Matzen, family and friends.

Recently, Matzen finalized edits for his latest film, The Black Eyed Children, and is preparing it for entrance into the 2011 Horrorfind short film festival and 2011 Maryland International Film Festival.

  • A Life of a Quarter entered into the HCC film show in 2004
    • His first production, under then Minute Made Productions, Matzen captured the natural day-in-the-life of a quarter anybody could pick up at their local fast food joint.
  • Life of a Pizza Delivery Boy 2005
    • Production died on the editing table – sometimes there isn’t enough.
  • 3Tards: The Series debuted as the first web-content for neonreel.com in 2006-2008
    • Six episodes and one bonus episode that marked the season of development for neon reel entertainment and introduced us into the World Wide Web.
  • 3Man Weave Music Video 2008
    • As a favor for using one of their songs in an episode of 3tards, neon reel shot a music video for a local rap group (3Man Weave)
  • An Hour Out, 2010 (Pending)
    • Originally slated for filming in the summer of 2010, this film was forced to the back burner once location arrangements fell through.
  • A Soft Goodbye, 2010
    • Began a new direction for neon reel entertainment. Matzen teamed up with writer Steve Shives to develop a simple concept film to feature a scene in which a couple allows their anger to conquer their civility and how the repercussions of flash judgment can ruin lives.
    • Marked the beginning of a triple feature that Matzen and crew put out in 2010 that would lead neon reel into a different direction.
  • Interrogation of The Downsville Deucer, Toby Benson Wants His Money 2010
    • Filmed simultaneously, these two projects incorporated techniques from Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock Submitted to the 2011 Maryland Film Festival
  • Black Eyed Children, 2011
    • Submitted to the 2011 Horrorfind Film Festival and 2011 Maryland International Film Festival.
    • Utilized steady cam methods and technology to provide easy movement on screen to further enhance viewer immersion
